AAUW (American Association of University Women) annually awards scholarships to foreign female students, enabling them to study at Master's, postgraduate, and postdoctoral levels in the US universities. 

What does it cover? The total amount granted is USD 18 000 for Master's level studies, USD 20 000 for postgrad level, and USD 30 000 for postdoctoral research.

Who is eligible? Women from any country, who do not have citizenship of or permanent residency in the US, may apply. Priority is given to candidates whose public and professional activity contributes to improving the position of girls and women worldwide.

You will need a diploma of higher education and a TOEFL certificate. Upon finishing their studies, the scholarship recipients have to return to their homeland and find a job that will provide benefit to the women community of their country.

Non-profit organization Schlumberger Foundation provides women with grants for postgrad and postdoc studies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). STEM is among the heavily male dominated disciplines. To make it more gender-balanced, this organization provides financial support to women who intend to carry out research in this area.

Candidates who receive the grant may use it to study in any leading university of the world

What does it cover? The grant for postgrad studies may amount up to USD 50 000, for postdoc – USD 40 000. The scholarship is awarded for one year and may be prolonged in case the recipient demonstrates good academic results, receives positive review of the hosting university mentor, and states in her application that she intends to return to her home country. 

Who is eligible? Women from developing countries or countries with emerging markets. The student should have submitted an application or be already enrolled to a Ph.D. program in a foreign university, have significant academic achievements, and possess teaching experience (or a desire to obtain it). The most important requirement for the candidate is active participation in the department and academic community activities, and eagerness to contribute to scientific research in her “alma mater” upon returning home.

Charitable organization Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) supports foreign female students with grants for receiving education in universities of USA, Canada, and some universities of the Republic of South Africa and Latin America. 

What does it cover? Approved candidates may receive up to USD 15 000 for covering tuition fees in the USA and Canada universities, and up to USD 7 000 — for studying in RSA or Latin America. 

Who is eligible? Women of 25 years old and over from developing countries and states with low per capita income. The list of countries is available here

In order to be awarded the scholarship, the students have to be enrolled in a university in one of the said countries at Bachelor, Master’s, or postgrad programs. Please note that a letter from you university should confirm your “enrolled” status: the “accepted” status would not suffice.

What does it cover? The full scholarship amount is USD 20 000. Half of it is transferred to the university to cover the tuition fee, and the other is given directly to the chosen candidate.

Who is eligible? Women from any country officially enrolled into a university on a Master’s or PhD program in the field of finance. 

How to apply? Application should be submitted online on the FINCAD website before June 31 of each year.

L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science program

L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science program was founded in 1998 under UNESCO aegis. The grant is given to women carrying out research in a chosen field: in 2021, it was Life and Environmental Sciences. Media refer to this program the “Nobel for women scientists”. The aim of the program is to support women who are already engaged in scientific research, and to encourage young girls to follow in their steps. 

What does it cover? Five largest grants in the International Awards category — EUR 100 000 each — go to the five outstanding women researchers from five continents. The grant amount on the national and regional levels varies per country. 

Who is eligible? Requirements regarding age and necessary professional qualification may vary per country. 

Priority is given to applicants who carry out original and novel research. A candidate must participate actively in the academic and educational activity at her “home university”.  

This grant is awarded annually on the national level to 250 women researchers worldwide.
