Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship Program, University of Toronto

Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship is awarded annually to 37 international students at the University of Toronto. It is intended to recognize students who show exceptional academic and creative achievement, as well as school and community leaders. 

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship covers tuition and living costs, textbooks, emergency and other expenses during the four years of study.

Who is eligible? International students who are citizens of any country applying to enroll in a bachelor’s program at the University of Toronto can be granted the scholarship.

How to apply? There are three steps. First, your school must nominate you for the scholarship and notify the university by November 30. Second, you need to apply for admission to one of the undergraduate programs by December 15. Finally, you have to apply for the scholarship on the university’s website until January 17.

Four Scholarships for International Students by the University of British Columbia

Every year, the University of British Columbia (UBC) awards over 10 million C$ (about 800,000 $) in scholarships, grants, and other forms of funding for students with exceptional achievement from all around the world.

The university awards about 50 scholarships in four international student programs each year. The Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award is a merit-based scholarship that is given to students showing excellent academic performance and leadership skills. Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award is a need-based award intended to help students from impoverished or war-torn regions. The International Impact Award supports students who are committed to social justice issues, climate change, inclusion, and freedom of expression. The Vantage One Excellence Award recognizes academically outstanding students whose English is not good enough yet to be admitted directly to UBC.

What does the scholarship cover? The size of the scholarship depends on the program. In some cases, the scholarship covers all tuition and living expenses.

Who is eligible? International students (citizens of any country) who enroll in bachelor’s programs no later than two years after they finish school, and this is their first college degree. The A grade for all the subjects in your high school diploma is a must. Your application has to meet all the university admission requirements, including the English proficiency level.

How to apply? First, choose a program and apply for it. To be considered for the scholarship, you need to be nominated by your school or an NPO. A letter of recommendation should be attached to your application. If required, attach documents showing your financial situation as well. You can apply for the scholarship on the university website.

Keep in mind that you cannot pick a scholarship program. It’s up to the admissions committee to decide which one is right for you.

The deadline to apply for a program and scholarship is December 1 of each year. Until February 1, you have to submit all the necessary documents. The results of the scholarship contest will be announced in March or April.

Global Leader of Tomorrow and International Entrance Scholarships of Distinction, York University, Ontario

The York University in Ontario offers four scholarships to international students who enroll in bachelor’s programs. Two scholarships are granted as part of the Global Leader of Tomorrow program and another two are awarded through the International Entrance Scholarship of Distinction.

What does the scholarship cover? The total amount of the Global Leader of Tomorrow scholarship is 80,000 $, which is 20,000 $ for each academic year of the four-year program. The International Entrance Scholarship of Distinction program is even more generous: students who are granted this scholarship will be entitled to 140,000 $ (35,000 $ per year). To receive the scholarship during all the years, students have to maintain excellent academic performance throughout the whole period of studies.

Who is eligible? International students who are entering the following bachelor’s programs no later than two years after they finish high school and have no previous university studies are eligible to apply for this scholarship.

Students have to show excellent academic performance (the A grade for all the subjects is required) and leadership skills through community service or outstanding achievement in arts, sports, or other fields.

How to apply? You need to be nominated for the scholarship by your school. Your application should include a contact person who can confirm this. Besides, you will need a letter of recommendation. The deadline to apply for a program and the scholarship is February 1 of each year. You can fill out and submit the application on the university’s website.

International Entrance Scholarship, University of Calgary

Every year, the University of Calgary awards two International Entrance Scholarships to international students entering their first year in any undergraduate degree in the upcoming fall semester. Apart from the applicant’s academic achievement, extracurricular activities are also taken into account here.

What does the scholarship cover? The scholarship is 15,000 $ per year and is renewed each academic year, provided recipients achieve a GPA of 2.60 or more. The total amount of the scholarship for four years is 60,000 $.

Who is eligible? The scholarship is open to international students who are not Canadian citizens and are entering the University of Calgary's undergraduate programs for the first time.

Prospective scholarship recipients must have a GPA of at least 3.20 according to the University's scale. Also, they must meet the English Language Proficiency requirements set by the university.

How to apply? First, you need to apply to a bachelor’s program you pursue. The early deadline for programs starting in the fall is December 15 each year, while the standard deadline is March 1. Then you apply for the scholarship which you can do on the university's website. Keep in mind that the scholarship application deadline is earlier than the closing date for applications and is on December 1 each year.

President's Scholarship for World Leaders, University of Winnipeg

The President's Scholarship for World Leaders is awarded to international students entering any faculty at the University of Winnipeg for the first time. The university awards a total of 53 scholarships.

What does the scholarship cover? Successful applicants will be paid 5,000 $.

Who is eligible? International students who are citizens of any country and applying to bachelor’s or master’s programs. Applicants must meet a grade point average of at least 80% for the program of their choice (see program description for specific numbers). Also, students have to show good leadership skills.

How to apply? All students who have applied to the university are eligible to apply for the scholarship too. One can fill out and submit an application on the university website by June 1 of each year.

International Master’s Award of Excellence (IMAE), University of Waterloo

Each year, the University of Waterloo awards the International Master's Award of Excellence (IMAE) to international students who have a master's degree and apply to research programs starting in the fall semester. Each faculty selects scholarship recipients independently based on their academic performance. The better your grades in your previous degree, the higher are your chances to be granted the scholarship.

What does the scholarship cover? Successful applicants will receive 2,500 $ per semester for a maximum of five semesters.

Who is eligible? Any international students entering the first semester of graduate programs at the University of Waterloo. 

Applicants are preferred who are already doing research. During their studies, they need to maintain high academic performance and pass the exams required by the curriculum on time.

How to apply? All the students who apply to study programs automatically enter the scholarship competition. The application deadline for programs starting in the fall semester is January or February each year.
